Come prospecting with us at a real coal mine on date to be rearranged.

  • Get yourself kitted out in miner's helmet and cap lamp

  • Travel 90m (300ft) down the mineshaft in a pit cage

  • Get a taste of life at the coalface with a guided tour

  • Visit the Pithead Baths, the Fan House, Blacksmith's Forge, Stables and Winding Engine House

  • See Mining Galleries and Exhibitions

  • Watch a modern coalface come to life as a virtual guide takes you through a simulated mine.

BIG PIT is the National Mining Museum of Wales and part of a World Heritage Site. It's also close to the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park and is easily accessible by car from the M4 (J25a westbound or J26 eastbound) or by bus from Newport, which also has good rail links.

Entry is free. Warm clothing and sensible footwear is advisable. Children must be over one metre tall to go on the underground tour. The site makes provision for wheelchair and disabled access.

Why not make a weekend of it? There is YHA accommodation nearby in hostels at Danywenallt (Talybont-on-Usk), Capel-y-Ffin (Llanthony, nr.
