Features for members ...

Posted by Gareth Bult at 12:44 on Wed, Oct 15, 2008

Ok, without wanting to be shot down by the management (i.e. take this as a purely technical 'it can be done' ;) ) the domain "arthur-ransome.org" can actually be used for more than just the website. You may notice that there are a number of email addresses in play which are directed to organisers within TARS ...

It would be technically possible to extend this to members in general such that members could have an email address @arthur-ransome.org, or alternatively @members.arthur-ransome.org. I don't know whether this is something the board would approve of or even something members might like, however from a user's point of view it does give people a "verified" and consistent point of contact.

I know for example people often use the email address given to them by their ISP, and when they switch ISP (people invariably do, eventually..) they get issued a new address .. which means telling everyone that their address has changed, with often untold associated hassle when you find you've used your old email address to register for all sorts of things that you can no longer recover the password for.

So, in this instance you'd change ISP and Encryptec would simply point your AR address at your new mailbox, minimal hassle .. anyway, be interested in people's thoughts and it's another reason to be a member ... :)

This might have some use, Gareth, if you wanted to contect another member off group about an aspect of a topic that you don't want to post about generally.

It could be done by clicking on the name underlined in yellow on the message head it would take to to the individual's area with an added send message option.

Also is the any way of contacting you as administrator directly, if needed?

Indeed, you can send me a message via the method you describe, or you can use the feedback option at the top of the page, or you can mail me at tarsnet@arthur-ransome.org.
