Finished?

Posted by Deirdre Iams-McGuire at 21:33 on Sat, Jul 24, 2010

When are the Characters,  Real People, and Real Places going to be finished? I remember when I first got on this site, I found them right off. I was looking at them again, and remembered seeing something that said "these features will  be finished soon" or something. What ever happened to that, and how soon till they're done?

Not sure about exactly what you are seeking.

Much of the information on  Characters,  Real People, and Real Places can be found in AR & Captain Flint's Trunk by Christina Hardyment - if you have not obtained a copy worth looking at the TARS stall.

Possibly some of the information you need can be found on the All Things Ransome site

http://www.allthingsransome.net/

Many of these items are dependent on the enthusiasm and energy of the person providing them.

If you have a specific query about an item, then a question posted on this board might elict the information you need.

(I am posting in my 'default' position of TARS Secretary, as no other official reply seems to be forthcoming.)

I think Deidre is referring to the "Characters", "Real People" and "Real Places" icons on the "Swallows & Amazons" page of the AR section on this site. At present, these icons are unlinked, as the relevant text has not yet been supplied. I am sure that Deidre realises that the missing text will not write itself, and shouting at us about it won't help. The TARS Literary & Resources Committee is ultimately responsible for the content of this website and they are at present unable to find anyone with the "enthusiasm and energy" (as Owen so aptly describes it) to write the missing text. There is, of course, the time factor as well. And there the matter stands. I wonder would Deidre like to help with this task?

I was talking about those, and I can help. For school, (ha-not for another two weeks) we have to have so many hours of community service, so I think that would count.  I also think my mom would like that option  more that fostering a parrot (which was what I had in mind originally).  So I'll help, and I'm glad it will be something worth writing about.

If you are interested in adding some content, it may help to review both the Wikipedia lists http://enwikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Swallows_and_Amazons_characters and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_places_in_Arthur_Ransome_books as well as the Arthur Ransome wiki, http://arthur-ransome.wikia.com/wiki/Arthur_Ransome_Wiki as far as I know parts or all of these may be copied without worrying about copyright issues as they are public domain.

I think for the first link to work properly, there should be a point  after en in enwikipedia. The second link is correct.

However at the base of the Wikipedia article you can navigate to characters, places, boats plus any of the 12 +1 books.

Adam is quite right. The wikipedia 'Characters' list is a very useful starting point. The 'Real People' and 'Real Places' are well documented in several places so it should not be too difficult to research these. I once sailed with Taqui Altounyan and she has signed my sopy of S & A "Taqui Altounyan (Captain John)" ........... so there's a start.
