Any ideas, please

Posted by Will Hawthorne at 11:06 on Thu, Apr 09, 2009

Over the past few years I've managed to build up a complete set of the first editions (first impression) of the S&A series. I sudenly realised that I should insure this as a job lot but I have no idea of the value - priceless to me!

They do not have the original dust jackets but are in generally good condition (for their age) and I have no desire to sell them. I enjoy too much just stopping by them and giving them a loving look!

Anyone have any ball park idea of the value?

Any help or advice will be most appreciated

Thanks, Will

Will - the commercial value of the 1st edition of each S&A book (other than SA)  without dust jacket averages £30-50 (some will be slightly higher, some lower).  SA will be higher - perhaps a few hundred.  An SA 1st Edn with dust jacket in good condition will fetch £3,000-5,000. Dust jackets are gold dust ! (This is in the UK, by the way.)

Will -

Signals May 2007 carries an article about the auction of a complete set of first editions WITH original dustjackets, in "superb condition". They went for £33,487.50 with the auctioneer's commission.

Have you tried phoning Linden Burke, our stall holder, at his shop Kirkland Books, 01539 733220. Open Thursdays to Saturdays. He sells such items and would know best the current value.

I think Peter's values are a bit low - I paid £60 for SD with Clifford webb drawings, without dustjacket,  but about 6th impression. Well actually, it was a valued present!

It depends where you look. I have found later 1st editions with dust jacket for about £25 plus postage. Pre war books which are heavier with their better quality paper tend to increse in value depending how far back in the series they are although PD remains an exception.

Certainly SD will go for about £300- 400.

Thanks for the advice - appreciated. I have a better idea now along with what I paid individually for each book  and a "premium" for the complete set. As I say this is for insurance value only. We all know they are priceless, regardless of edition, etc!!!
