Jackets? Hats?

Posted by Deirdre Iams-McGuire at 17:47 on Thu, Jun 10, 2010

I was looking at all the stuff there is you can in the TARS Stall, and I was surprised there weren't any sweatshirts or hats other things like that. Is there a TARS sweatshirt?? I know I've seen pictures of a few people with them in Signals, but those are for specific regions. If there isn't one, I'd be happy to help with ideas.  I know I'd buy one!

I looked at this issue for the Australasian TARS a little while ago.  I found that it was better to buy sew-on badges, which could be applied to any kind of clothing.  I have one on a  sailing cap and another on a polartec jacket.   This gets around the problem of having to stock shirts or caps of various sizes, with the possibility of being left with some that no-one wanted.   Badges are also cheaper than whole garments, and easier to mail to members.  Our AusTARS logo is the crossed Swallow-and-Pirate flags with the Southern Cross constellation.  Yours may well be the logo used on 'Signals from Tarsus'.

That's neat, sewing them on. I've had patches like that before. It has a wave on it. I will make something over the summer.

This sounds like a great idea, I have been thinking about something for TARSUS, Do you get many requests in Australia.

I will have to think of an appropriate design. Thanks David.

G'day Robin,

The minimum that we could order from the badge manufacturer (a cottage industry which I was pleased to support) was 50, so I took the plunge and ordered them, bearing in mind that there are only 55 of us in Oz and 14 in N.Z.  I now have just half-a-dozen left.  Our selling price is just $5.50 each, which won't break anyone's bank.  If enough of us do this with individual designs, there could be a trade between members attending the IAGM, or as we did, a way of saying "thank-you" to those who have helped us, such as a very popular and recently-retired Overseas Co-Ordinator.

Cheers,

David.

Deirdre -

about three years ago we had a t-shirt design competition in Outlaw, to design a t-shirt for Junior TARS. I started the ball rolling with one using semaphore figures taken from AR's drawings to spell "JUNIOR TARS". There were four entries including a good one from Ruby, with a heraldic shield with swallows, and skull and crossbones, in the four quarters, and a motto of Swallows and Amazons in latin.

The idea was to print them onto iron-on t-shirt transfers, but we never got as far as choosing one design. The problem of doing it any other way especially for Juniors is keeping a wide range of sizes in stock, or the cost of getting them made individually. The iron-on transfers don't last for ever, but probably Juniors would outgrow the t-shirt first!

The designs are still on the Junior TARS Yahoo group - http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/JuniorTARS/photos/album/1238721104/pic/list

if you or anyone else has an idea for a design, do let me know!

Instead of worrying about ordering 50 items of each size, having to pay in advance, store them, and possibly not sell them all....

....look into "on demand" clothing printers such as spreadshirt and cafepress. You upload the design image onto their website, and customers buy direct from the site, one item at a time. Much less hassle for any club or organisation to create merchadise.

I saw the picture of the TARSUS patch. I think I'll get one. I don't know what to sew it onto, but I'll get one anyways.

Thanks Deidre I look forward to receiving your order,

I have pictured a few ideas of what to do with them, it can be a talking point to introduce people to Swallows and Amazons.
