Swallows and Amazons listed amongst the classics
Swallows and Amazons was listed amongst the classics at the Downing Street launch of the UK National Year of Reading.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown hosted the launch seminar for this campaign, which will try to encourage families to read together. During the seminar the Schools Secretary, Ed Balls, stated that "We need children, adults and families to be reading because they love it... not because people like me say it is important." Efforts to enhance reading should include a greater emphasis in school curriculums, as well as encouragement to employers to provide places for their staff to read.
