Problems with my browser
Concerns regarding web browsers and the new AR website
One or two people have expressed concern that their web browser does not work perfectly with the new website. Unfortunately, there are many web browsers, all of which work in slightly different ways and when designing a website you really only have two options:
- Play to the lowest common denominator, which leads to a visually deficient website
- Play to current browsers, which leads to a much enhanced experience for the vast majority of users.
Most (if not all) people investing in new sites choose the latter. Given the percentage of people using old browsers and the time and effort involved in making a site work fully compatible with them, the prior is simply not cost-effective.
To put things into perspective, here are some figures from the AR website statistics showing who's using what:
| Browsers | Grabber | Hits | Percent | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MS Internet Explorer | No | 47216 | 72.4 % | |
| Firefox | No | 10650 | 16.3 % | |
| Safari | No | 3512 | 5.3 % | |
| Unknown | ? | 1721 | 2.6 % | |
| Mozilla | No | 557 | 0.8 % | |
| Opera | No | 504 | 0.7 % | |
| Netscape | No | 430 | 0.6 % | |
| Acrobat Webcapture | Yes | 263 | 0.4 % |
As a result the site should work properly with both Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7 (although it's better with 7) with optimal performance being obtained using the Firefox web browser.
Firefox can be downloaded free of charge and is available for most systems.
